Olli Caldwell got his Ginetta Junior campaign off to a magnificent start at Croft with 5th place in his very first race, which took him to a Rookie podium!
Starting from 8th place for race one, Olli was immediately up to 3rd by turn one and was able to hold on throughout a tough race to finish 5th! Considering this was his very first race in a car he did an amazing job to go head to head with the championship contenders and hold his own.
By the flag Olli was just 2.6 seconds off race winner Stuart Middleton and was only 1.4 seconds off an overall podium. Given that Olli was only just old enough to race not only did he become the first rookie to stand on a podium in their first race, he also became the youngest and that is a record that is unlikely to ever be beaten again!
It was a dream start to Olli’s season which has seen him watching from the side-lines for the first nine rounds whilst waiting to turn 14 and now he has shown how capable he is in the Ginetta Junior car.
After Olli had been able to get his head round what had just happened he needed to focus as there were still two more races left in the weekend.
Unfortunately race two didn’t go quite so well with Olli finishing down in 16th place, but race three he was on the move as he was able to finish 13th place in what you would call a solid result for someone in their first ever race weekend in a field of 21 drivers!
To break two records and get a rookie podium in Olli’s first race weekend as the youngest driver in the field sounds almost unbelievable, but Olli has got his Ginetta Junior career off to a fantastic start and the experience and confidence gained should leave him in good stead for the rest of the season!
Having only just turned 14 that weekend, one of those records is likely to never be beaten again! He surprised everyone, himself included. That 5th place was a huge achievement and he had really made himself a one to watch for the remainder of the season.
