TRS Arden Junior Team have announced that Olli Caldwell will race in the British F4 Championship this season competing for the Challenge Cup and the overall championship.
Having raced in both the Rotax Max Euro Challenge and Ginetta Junior Championship last year with great success, Olli will now be stepping up to race in single seaters for the first time.
The series, which is certified by the FIA, supports the British Touring Car Championship and regularly draws crowds in excess of 30,000 people. All ten race weekends are covered live on ITV4 with programme repeats during the week drawing in a six-figure hit rate.
Olli had a fantastic 2016 season, in karts he only competed in seven races but despite this he finished 3rd in the ultra-competitive Rotax Max European Challenge! There were a total of 56 drivers entered over the four round series which saw Olli eventually stand on the championship podium. This result earnt him a ticket to go to the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals in Sarno, Italy, to represent Great Britain. Olli didn’t let the nation down as, despite some problems in the final, Olli was able to finish 8th out of 72 drivers picking up the fastest lap award along the way!
With Olli’s birthday in June he will be competing in the British F4 Challenge Cup this year, which allows drivers to score points at seven of the ten rounds. However, the calendar has not fallen in Olli’s favour and he will score points at just six rounds meaning he will be playing catch up right from the off!
This is a similar challenge to what Olli faced in the Ginetta Junior Championship last year as he joined the series at round five. However, he responded to that challenge with a podium on his very first race as he made history by becoming the youngest driver ever to do so. He then went on to earn another four Rookie podiums out of the thirteen races he competed in.
Those experiences last year have given Olli some great insights into the tracks he’ll be visiting this season, which could be key to his 2017 season given the task at hand.
Competing with Arden Motorsport he is certainly in good hands with Arden competing for the title last year all the way to the last round. The team also picked up Rookie wins and podiums at the last round so Olli will certainly have that momentum to help him get off to a good start.
Olli Caldwell: “I’m really excited about stepping up to race F4 this year especially with a team as experienced as Arden. Although it’s a completely different car to drive compared to the Ginetta I’m hoping my experience and track knowledge from last year will help me be competitive as I will be joining four rounds later than everyone else"
Ben Bloomfield, TRS Arden Team Manager: “We are delighted that Olli will be joining our F4 team this year. We are looking forward to a successful Challenge Cup season together. Olli has been part of the Young Racing Driver Academy since he was 11 years old and it is great to see him making the transition into single seater racing with us.”
The British F4 Championship is known as the hardest entry level single seater series in the World with drivers travelling from as far as Australia to compete. It has only been running in it’s current format for two years with Lando Norris winning the title in 2015.
For Olli his season will officially start on the 10th/11th June at Croft before heading to Snetterton, Knockhill, Rockingham, Silverstone and Brands Hatch GP.
It’s a series that carries a lot of credentials and it’s going to be an exciting year for Olli, but a learning one at that too!
